Absolute
a word free from limitations or qualifications
Allusion
a direct or indirect reference to something which is presumably commonly known, such an event, book, myth, place, or work of art
Aphorism
a concise statement that expresses succinctly a general truth or idea, often using rhyme or balance.
Character foil
Used between two characters whose personalities or backgrounds are starkly dissimilar
Euphemism
expressions that soften an unpleasant situation. Writers use euphemisms to skirt around subjects that sound bad and include things like death, sex, money, and politics
Oxymoron
When two contradictory words are used side by side to create contrast
Paradox
a self-contradictory statement or argument. It presents conflicting ideas and relates them in a way that forces you to wonder if it’s true or not
