extended metaphor
term for any type of language that isn’t literal; a simile, metaphor, etc.
figurative language
word or phrase that means something different than its literal meaning.
figure of speech
describes traditions for each genre; differentiate between an essay and journalistic writing.
generic conventions
division of a particular form of art or utterance; the category something falls into.
genre
any talk giving moral advice, similar to a sermon.
homily
an intentional exaggeration for the sake of emphasis.
hyperbole
represents objects, subjects, and ideas in a way that appeals to the five senses; illustrative writing.
