Character
An individual in a narrative
Ex: Harry Potter
Chiasmus
A verbal pattern in which the second half of an expression is balanced against the first but with the parts reversed
Ex: “never let a fool kiss you or a kiss fool you”
Circular Argument
An argument that commits the logical fallacy of assuming what it is attempting to prove
Ex: Mr. Archible dressed nice, because the assistant principal came in for observation today.
Claim
An arguable statement, which may be a claim of fact, value, or policy
Ex: the cell is the basic unit of structure and function in living things
Clause
A group of words that contains a subject and a predicate
Ex: the dog loves playing fetch
Climax
Words and sentences that lead up to and place emphasis on the culmination of a series of events
Ex: the climax of The Outsiders was when the church started to burn down and Johnny got badly hurt
Colloquial
A type of writing which seeks the effect of informal language, which is distinct from literary English
Ex: “I was gonna say that”
Comparison
A rhetorical strategy in which a write examines similarities and/or differences between two people,places, ideas or things
Ex: The girl is taller than her father!”
Complement
A word/word group that completes the predicate in a sentence
Ex: The puppy is PLAYFUL
Concession
An argumentative strategy in which a speaker/writer acknowledges the validity of an opponents perspective
Ex: is Donald Trump correct about the things he says?
Conjunction
The part of speech that is used to connect words, phrases, clauses or sentences
Ex: FANBOYS
Connotation
The feelings and implications that a word may be associated with
Ex: That is garbage
Consonance
The recurrence of similar sounds, especially consonants, in close proximity
Ex: The hare had a hairy hat
Coordination
The grammatical connection of two or more ideas to give them equal emphasis and importance
Ex: Melissa is sick, so we’ll have to cancel
Deduction
A method of reasoning in which a conclusion follows necessarily from the stated premises
Ex: Dennis misses work. At work there is a party, so Dennis missed the party
