AP Human Geography Chapter 1 Flashcards
Absolute Location
The exact location of an object, usually expressed in coordinates of longitude and latitude
Core
Classification of a country or region that has wealth, higher education levels, more advanced technologies, many resources, strong militaries, and powerful allies
Density
The number of things- people, animals or objects in a specific area
Distance Decay
The farther away one thing is from another, the less interaction the two things will have
Distribute
To arrange within a given space
Ecological Perspective
The relationship between the living and their environment
Environmental Determinism
Controlled or determined by a physical environment
Formal Region
An area that has one or more shared trait, also called a uniform region
Friction of distance
The longer the journey is the more time, effort and cost it is
Functional Region
A function around the focal point
Globalization
Processes on a worldwide scale
Human Geography
The study of how humans understand, use and altar the earth
Location
The position that a point of object occupies the Earth
Mental Map
Internalized representations of portions of the Earth’s Surface
A Model
Presents signifcant features or relationships in generalized form
Node
A focal point of a functional region
Pattern
The way things are arranged in a particular space
Perceptual Region
The attitude or feelings abut a place, also called a Vernacular region. ( Stereotypes)
Periphery
Opposite of Core. Has less wealth, poor education levels, unstable government
Physical Geography
The study of natural processes and the distribution of features in the environment.
Place
A location on Earth that is distinguished by its physical and human and characteristics
Possibilism
Theory of human environment interaction that states the ability to adapt
Region
An area of Earth’s Surface with certain characteristics
Relative Location
A description of a place where it is in relation to other areas
Scale
The area of the world being studied
Semi Pheriphery
(Middle Class) A country or Region that have qualities of both care and peripheral areas
Site
A places absolute location
Situation
Location of place in relation to other places
Space
The area between two or more things
Spatial Perspective
Geographic perspective on how people live on Earth
Sustainability
Earth’s land and natural resources( Renewable Energy)
Sustainable Development
Development that meets the needs of the present
Time Space Compression
A principle that describes the ways in which modern transportation and how to communicate long distances( Like a cellphone)
Vernacular Region
Called a perceptual Region: The way the region reflects peoples feelings and attitudes
World System Theory
Theory describing spatial and functional relationships
Absolute Distance
Distance that can be measured using standard length( Yards, Feet, Inches)
Absolute Direction
Card nails direction( Sout, North, East,West)
Cartographer
A person who makes maps
Census
An official count of number of people in a defined area like a state
Geographic Info System (GIS)
A computer system that allow the collection of data for analysis
Global Positioning System (GPS)
A network of satellites that can pinpoint an exact location
Map Scale
The size of the map, to the size of the area
Quanitive
Involving data that can be meausred by numbers
Qualitative
Involving data that is descriptive
Refrence Map
A map that focuses on the location of places
Relative Distance
Distance determined in relation to other places or objects
Relative Direction
Direction based on a person’s perception ( Left, Right, Up , Down)
Remote Sensing
Collecting or analyzing data from a location without making physical contact
Thematic Map
Any Map that focuses on one or more variables
Topography
The representation of Earht’s surface to show natural and human made features
