What is #3?
Thyroarytenoid muscle
What is #4?
Posterior cricoarytenoid muscle
What is #1? Describe it’s movement
Cricothyroid muscle. It tightens the vocal cords when it contracts
What is #2? Describe it’s movement
Vocalis muscle. Lateral to the vocal ligament and on contraction it increases tension in the vocal cords
What is #3? Describe it’s movement
Thyroarytenoid muscle. As it contracts it pulls the arytenoid forwards which as a rotational axis and pivots, as it does so, the glottis closes.
What is #4? Describe it’s movement
Transverse arytenoid muscle. As it contracts, the arytenoids are pulled closer together to close the glottis.
What is #5? Describe it’s movement
Posterior cricoarytenoid muscle. As this muscle contracts it makes the arytenoids swivel in a way that abducts the cords (opens).
What is #6? Describe it’s movement
Lateral cricoarytenoid muscle. It connects the tips of the arytenoids and as it contracts, they arytenoids rotate in a way that adducts or closes the vocal cords.
What is #1?

What is #1?
Hyoid bone
What is #2?
Thyrohyoid membrane
note, this is going off powerpoint slide #3 from lecture 17 and does seem to be labeled slightly differently from his earlier lecture packet. The hyoid bone appears to be shaved down, perhaps this is posterior aspect of the thyrohyoid membrane?
What is #3?
Thyrohyoid muscle
What is #4?
Median cricothyroid ligament
Another one from slide 3 from lecture 17 that is labeled differently from his earlier packet. We simply called this the cricothyroid ligament in an earlier lecture, the slide has it labeled as median cricothyroid ligament
