Allegory
The device of using character and/or story elements symbollically to represent an abstraction in addition to the literal meaning.
Anecdote
A short, narrative account of an amusing, unusual, revealing, or interesting event.
Analogy
A similarity or comparison between two different things or the relationship between them.
Antecedent
The word, phrase, or clause referred to by a pronoun.
Conceit
A fanciful expression, usually in the form of an extended metaphor or a surprising analogy between seemingly dissimilar objects.
Clause
A grammatical unit that contains both a subject and a verb.
Didactic
Literally means “instructive”. Works to have the primary aim of teaching or instructing.
Euphemism
Greek for “good speech”. A more agreeable or less offensive substitute for generally unpleasant words or concepts.
Extended Metaphor
A metaphor developed at great length, occuring frequently in or throughout a work.
Genre
The major category into which a literary work fits.
Juxtaposition
Placing dissimilar ites, descriptions, or ideas close together, especially for comparison or contrast.
Paradox
A statement that appears to be self-contradictory or opposed in common sense, but upon closer inspection contains some degree of truth or validity.
Pedantic
An adjective that describes words, phrases, or general tone that is overly scholarly, academic, or bookish.
Subordinate Clause
A clause that cannot stand on its own.
Syllogism
Greek for “reckoning together”. A deductive system of formal logic that presents two premises that inevitably lead to a sound conclusion.
