Ap Ch 17 Flashcards
Gene expression
a process by which DNA directs protein synthesis, including two stages: translation and transcription
Transcription
is the synthesis of RNA using information in DNA
Messenger RNA(mRNA)
is the genetic material that gives instructions to make proteins and is the product of transcription
Translation
is the synthesis of a polypeptide bond, using information in the mRNA
Ribosomes
organelles in the cell where the site translation takes place
prokaryotes
organisms that are bacteria, translation of mRNA can begin before transcription has finished
eukaryotic
organisms that have linear DNA, the nuclear envelope separates transcription from translation
primary transcript
is the initial RNA transcript from any gene before prossecing
Central Dogma
is the concept of cell going to the process DNA-RNA-protein
What are the two types of secondary structure?
Alpha helix and beta pleated sheets
polypeptide
the bonds in amino acids that make proteins and there are three structures
Codon
is the three nucleotide sequence in mRNA
Anticodon
is the three nucleotide sequence in tRNA
Triplet code
a series of nonoverlapping, three-nucleotide words
Methionine
is the amino acid that starts synthesis of protein.
