AP Biology Chapter 1/25 Notes Flashcards
Emergent Properties
New Characteristics can “Show up” by the interaction of parts.
Reductionism
Taking anything apart to smaller units in order to better understand the whole.
Qualitative Data
Looking at characteristics based only on observations.
Quantitative
Using numbers (the superior of the two data types)
Inductive reasoning
Using specific observations to come to a general conclusion
Deductive reasoning
Using a general statement to justify a specific statement. Usually in the form of a hypothesis (“if, then” statement)
Limitations of biology
the supernatural
Scientific theories
Educated guesses, but yet commonly understood as being truthful
Biosphere
Region on earth that contains life
cells
most basic unit of life
2 kingdom system
anamailia, plantae
5 kingdom system
animailia, plantae, fungi, protista, monera
3 domain system
eukarya (animailia, plantae, fungi, protista), archea (monera), bacterial/eubacteria (monera)
Indexing fossils
being able to put the fossils in order based on age. The deeper, the older. The shallower, the younger
Radiometric dating
measures the decay of radioactive isotopes. (living = carbon 14 -> nitrogen 14)/(non-living = potassium 40 -> argon 40)
