AP Bio unit 1 Flashcards
What four elements make up 96% of living matter?
Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen
What is a chemical bond?
Attraction between 2 atoms from sharing or transferring valence electrons
What is a covalent bond?
Sharing of electrons
Ionic bonds
Transferring of electrons
Hydrogen bonds
Partially positive hydrogen bond in one polar covalent is attracted to an electronegative atom in another polar covalent molecule
Is water polar or nonpolar?
Polar
Cohesion
Molecules attracted to the same molecule
Ex: hydrogen bonds between water molecules
Capillary action
Upward movement of water due to cohesion, adhesion, surface tension
Ex: cactus
Solvent
Dissolving agent
Solute
Thing being dissolved
What is a functional group?
Groups of atoms within a molecule that confer specific properties
Isomer
Molecules that have the same chemical formula but differ in placement/arrangement of atoms or types of bonds between atoms
Dehydration reaction
Bonds two monomers with the loss of H2O
Hydrolysis
Breaks the bonds in a polymer by adding H2O
What are carbohydrates made of?
Sugars and polymers of sugars, obtain carbonyl and hydroxyl groups
Saccharides
Involve sugars
What are proteins made of?
Polypeptides
Is an amino acid a protein and what are they made of?
Yes, molecules that have amino group and carboxyl group
Functions of proteins
Antibody, enzyme, messenger, structural, transport/storage
What are nucleic acids made of?
Polymers made of nucleotide monomers
Four levels of protein structure
Primary, secondary, tertiary, quarternary
What 2 forms of nucleic acids are there?
RNA and DNA
DNA properties
Double helix, strands are anti-parallel, does not have oxygen atom, A bonds to T
RNA properties
Single strand, A bonds to U
What are fats composed of?
Glycerol and fatty acids
Saturated fatty acid
No double bonds between carbons in the carbon chain
Unsaturated fatty acid
Contains one or more double bonds
Head of a phospholipid
Hydrophilic
Tail of a phospholipid
Hydrophobic
