AP Flashcards
Whats the membrane potential?
Voltage difference between the outside of a cell and inside.
What are the 4 stages involved in an action potential?
Resting potential, depolarisation, re-polarisation and hyperpolarisation.
What ions are involved at resting potential
calcium, potassium, chloride and protein
What ions are involved at depolarisation?
Sodium and potassium
What is diffusion?
Movement of ions and molecules from regions of high concentration to low.
What is electrostatic pressure?
Electrically charged molecules move to areas that have molecules of the opposite charge. The opposite charges attract eachother and similar charges repel.
Whats the resting potential charge?
-70 mV
Depolarisation charge?
+40mV
Hyperpolarisation charge?
-90mV
Repolarisation charge?
-70mV
Whats is the function of a neuron?
Detect information from the environment - allows us to move and act,
How many neurons in the body?
Between 100 and 1000 billion
What are the types of neurons?
Sensory - detect info of light, sound, taste etc.
Motor neurones - contol muscles/actions
Interneurones - relay and process info between other neurons.
A
Dendrite
