aos3 Flashcards
parts of the neuron
cell body (soma) dendrites axon myelin axon terminals
function of dendrites
the bushy spines of a neuron that receives a message
function of axon
long stick part of the neuron that conducts electrical impulses away from the cell body to the sending end of a neuron
function of myelin
a fat/ protein substance that surrounds and insulates the axon
function of axon terminals
end of the neuron that releases a message into the synapse
what is hemispheric specialisation
the idea that each of the brain’s cerebral hemispheres, has its own specialisation
what are the cerebral hemispheres
2 areas of the brain connected by the corpus callosum
what are functions of the left hemisphere of the brain
- verbal and analytical functions
- left hemisphere controls right side of the body
- reading
- writing
- speaking (production and interpretation)
- aspects of sequential processes
what are functions of the right hemisphere of the brain
- non-verbal functions
- controls left side of the body
- visual awareness
- spatial awareness
what are glial cells
a specialised cell that protects and supports neurons and their fucntions
roles of glial cells
- hold neurons in place
- provides neurons with nutrients and oxygen
- produces myelin
types of neurons; what are motor neurons?
nerve cells carrying messages from the brain to skeletal muscles causing them to contract or relax
types of neurons; what are sensory neurons
nerve cells that receive and carry sensory messages from the environment responsible for sending info to CNS
types of neuron; what are interneurons
they connect motor and sensory neurons, responsible for the transmission and integration of messages within CNS
what are the 4 lobes of the brain
- frontal
- parietal
- temporal
- occipital
