What happened in June 1791?
Louis and his family were arrested after abandoning the new regime and fleeing Paris
They got as far as Varennes
What did moderate politicians try and do?
They tried to recover the King’s position but his treachery had driven the ordinary people of Paris into a republican frenzy
What happened in August 1792?
The attack on Tuileries
A Paris mob swarmed the Kings palace and forced the King to take refuge in the Legislative Assembly
What did the Assembly do in response to the attack on Tuileries?
The assembly disbanded and suspended Louis
Who became the government after the Legislative Assembly disbanded?
The National Convention
What did the National Convention do?
The national convention abandoned the 1791 constitution, abolished the monarchy and initiated a republic
What had been decided by late 1792?
By late 1792 it had been decided that the King would be put on trial before the constitution
When was the King found guilty?
January 17th 1793
When was the King executed?
21 January 1793
