No, Dolly - See, I was walking home, taking a short cut and, and - and - and the lad - he took advantage of me…” “No Nan, not you too!”, “The lad on the day war was declared, his name was - his name was Clem Fisher”
Metaphor
Unexpected discoveries - “Actually, ma’am, my dad changed our surname after the war. After they emigrated here. It was originally Vischer. But we Germans weren’t the most popular. People used to throw stones at our house.” “So you’re a fake Fisher?” “Fraid so”, “Not related to any Fishers, even?” “No, ma’am”
Contrast
Questioned or challenged discoveries - “She needs to know the world is bigger than just this.” “I’m offering you a better life.” “A better life?” “The point is, you could live in a real home, for the first time.” “A real home?” “You deserve better.” “Better?” “Hang on. Are you saying you’d rather live in a humpy by the river? When I’m promising you the world?” “Your world. And your just assuming that your world is better. But actually, when I think about it. I’m not so sure it is better.”
