AOS 2 how do plant and animal systems function Flashcards
what is an organ
a vital piece of our body that is apart of our systems
what is a cell
the basic structural and functional unit of all living organisms
what is a tissue
a group of cells of similar structure and function working together
what is an organ
two or more tissues preforming a specific function
what is a system
a network of organs and tissues working together
what are the three types of permanent tissues found in plants?
Ground tissue
Vascular tissue
Derminal tissue
explain ground tissue
provides support and storage for plants. Where photosynthesis occurs
explain vascular tissue
tissue such as xylem and phloem
explain derminal tissue
minimises water loss, usually found on leaf surface
what are three tissues found in the human body
epithelial tissue
muscle tissue
connective tissue
what is epithelial tissue?
tissue that covers flat surfaces e.g skin+lining
what is muscle tissue
tissue that contracts for movement e.g heart and gut muscles
what is connective tissue
tissue that binds to the body structure e.g bone Cartlidge and adipose tissue
what are the basic needs that organisms must meet
-Energy and nutrients need to be readily available
-waste removal
-capable of defending itself against danger
what are the two types of plants?
vascular plants
non vascular plants
what is a vascular plant?
a plant that contains vascular tissue, which is responsible for transporting water and minerals throughout
what is a non vascular plant?
a plant that only requires simplified tissues to function
what are the three primary organs for a vascular plant
leaves
stem
roots
examples of vascular plants
flowering plants, shurbs, conifers or pines and ferns
what are the two types of systems for plants?
Root system
shoot system
what is the root system
the part of the plant that lie below the surface of the soil (the roots) and are responsible for providing a constant supply of water and minerals to the stem and leaves
what is the shoot system
the parts of the plant that are above the ground and responsible for exchanging oxygen and carbon dioxide with the atmosphere and for carrying out photosynthesis
list the two parts of the shoot system and their function
leaves-photosynthesis
stems-structural support and transport of substances
list the two parts of the root system and their functions
roots(primary)- grow downwards for strength and anchoragee, source water and store food
roots (secondary) branch to the side, increasing the surface area for absorption of water and minerals
