16
Q

what is a vascular plant?

A

a plant that contains vascular tissue, which is responsible for transporting water and minerals throughout

17
Q

what is a non vascular plant?

A

a plant that only requires simplified tissues to function

18
Q

what are the three primary organs for a vascular plant

A

leaves
stem
roots

19
Q

examples of vascular plants

A

flowering plants, shurbs, conifers or pines and ferns

20
Q

what are the two types of systems for plants?

A

Root system
shoot system

21
Q

what is the root system

A

the part of the plant that lie below the surface of the soil (the roots) and are responsible for providing a constant supply of water and minerals to the stem and leaves

22
Q

what is the shoot system

A

the parts of the plant that are above the ground and responsible for exchanging oxygen and carbon dioxide with the atmosphere and for carrying out photosynthesis

23
Q

list the two parts of the shoot system and their function

A

leaves-photosynthesis
stems-structural support and transport of substances

24
Q

list the two parts of the root system and their functions

A

roots(primary)- grow downwards for strength and anchoragee, source water and store food

roots (secondary) branch to the side, increasing the surface area for absorption of water and minerals

25
what is Xylem
responsible for transporting water and dissolved minerals from the roots to the rest of the plant (water) (up plant)
26
What is Phloem?
Responsible for transporting sugar throughout the plant (food) (both ways(up and down))
27
explain a extracellular pathway
water diffuses into the roots in the gaps between cells
28
explain a cytoplasmic pathway
mineral ions (and small amounts of water) either passively diffuse into the cytoplasm or are taken up via active transport in the root hair cells
29
what is transpiration?
the evaporation of water from leaves and movement of liquids up the xylem
30
what are the factors effecting transpiration
temperature-higher temp= more water evaporation light-high light= stomata increase amount of co2 absorbed, increasing amount of water lost to transpiration humidity- as humidity increases=less water evaporates into air wind- windy day=layer of water on leaf blown away water availability- when high availability then roots absorb more therefor plant increase rate of transpiration
