Diatonic/ Chromatic
Moving up or down the notes a semitone at a time.
Consonant/ Dissonant
Pleasant, agreeable intervals. Dissonant is the opposite.
Pedal
Used to sustain or hold notes.
Drone
A continuous note underneath the other parts in the music, found in Indian style music.
Cadences: perfect, plagal, imperfect, interrupted, tierce de picardie
Perfect: 5-1 (V-I) Plagal: 4-1 (VI-I) Imperfect: ?-5 (?-V) Interrupted: Minor Tierce de Picardie: Minor to Major
Chords and progressions
A series of musical chords moving to establish a goal of tonality.
Chord with Roman Numerals
I is tonic. II is supertonic. III is mediant. VI is subdominant. V is dominant. VI is submediant. VII is leading note. VIII is tonic.
Tonal/ atonal
Major or minor, or no obvious key.
Major/ minor
Keys that sound either happy or sad.
Modal
Key with a seven-note scale.
