Employee
A person working for another person or a business for wages or a salary
Motivation
The willingness of a person to expend energy and effort in doing a job or task
Performance related pay
A financial reward to employees whose work has reached or exceeded a set standard
Career Advancement
The opportunity to advance to a better job
Investment in Training
Improving the skills of employees
Support and sanction
The positive and negative ways in which an employer can relate to employees. Sanction is a form of punishment
Motivation strategies
A business may use financial or non-financial strategies to motivate employees
Training options
The process of teaching staff how to do their job more efficiently and effectively by boosting their skills and knowledge through on-the-job or off-the-job options.
Performance management strategies
The actions taken to improve both business and individual employee performance by relating the business objectives with the employee objectives.
Management of objectives
A process of setting goals, using SMART principle, which relate to an employees key areas of responsibility. It creates a sense of direction and provides a measure for assessing the work performance of the employee.
Appraisals
Any method of evaluating the performance of an employee against pre-set targets
Self-Evaluation
An employee self-assess both their performance related to their predetermined objectives and their contribution to their business team or unit.
Employee observation
Seeking a variety of opinions on the performance of employees, gathering feedback from a range of people.
Termination
The ending of the employment of an employee
Retirement
Occurs when an employee decides to give up full-time or part-time work and no longer be a part of the labour force
Redundancy
Occurs when a persons job no longer exists, usually due to the technological changes, a business restructure or a merger or acquisition
Resignation
Voluntary termination that occurs when an employee leaves the workplace, usually to go to another job
Dismissal
The termination of an employment contract due to incompetence or indisciplined
Entitlement
The legal rights of employees and the obligations of employers when the employment relationship ends
Transition issues
Services offered to transition employees to their next opportunity, whether that be to unpaid work (retirement) or due to redundancy
Human Resources Managers
Managing a wide range of responsibilities relating to the human (employee) function within a business in order to increase the efficiency of both employees and the business
Employer association
Provide a range of adobe to employees and represent their interests on the employee relation issues
Unions
A group of employees combining to protect common interests in matters relating to their employment
Fair Work Commission
Australia’s national workplace relations tribunal. It’s role is to assist employees and employers to maintain fair and productive workplaces. The FWC is an independent body that operates under the Fair Work Act 2009
Awards
A legally binding agreement that sets out minimum wages and conditions for a group of employees
Wages
The monetary reward for labour, paid on a weekly basis, calculated by multiplying the hourly rate by the number of hours worked
Conditions of Work
Wages and conditions are set out in the Fair Work Act 2009 which are set out in the National Employment Standards
Dispute
Industrial disagreement between employees and employers
Grievance Procedures
Provides an orderly system whereby the employee and employer can resolve matters relating to complaints about wages, hours, working conditions or disciplinary action
Mediation
The confidential discussion of issues in a non-threatening environment, in the presence of a neutral, objective third party. Many businesses now specify mediation as a first step in their dispute resolution or grievance procedures
Arbitration
A method of industrial dispute resolution where an independent third party listens to both sides of the agreement, then makes a decision based on the arguments, which is legally binding on both parties
Workplace Relations
Historically referred to as industrial relations, workplace relations is concerned with the contractual, emotional, physical and practical relationship between employer and employee
Market Share
The proportion of total sales in a given market or industry that is controlled or held by a business, calculated for a specific period of time
Human Resource Management
The management of a wide range of responsibilities relating to the human (employees) function within a business in order to increase the efficiency of both employees and the business
Development
The process designed to build up skills necessary for future work activities and responsibilities
Hierarchy of Needs
Abraham Maslow representation of human needs in the form of a pyramid or hierarchy
SMART Goals
Objectives or goals which are specific, measurable, attainable/ achievable, relevant or realistic and timely or time-bound
Bonus
A one-off payment given to a particular employee or group of employees as a reward for meeting particular target, or for some other special effort
Commission
An amount paid for accomplishing a sale, paid to the salesperson who accomplished the sale, and usually calculated as a fixed percentage of the sale price
Gainsharing
A method of rewarding employees for making suggestions that improve productivity in a business. The savings achieved from gear improvements are distributed to the employees
Productivity
A ratio of the output of goods and services to the inputs used to achieve that output
Learning organisation
Monitors and interprets its environment, seeking to improve its understanding of the interrelationship between its actions and its environment
Performance Feedback
The information provided to an employee after a performance appraisal
Conflict
Disputes, disagreements or dissatisfaction between individuals and/or groups
Strike
Occurs when employees withdraw their labour for a period of time in pursuit of improvements in their employment conditions
Protected industrial action
Action taken by either party to a dispute that has been approved by the Fair Work Commission
Unprotected Industrial Action
Action that has not been approved by the Fair Work Commission
