Aortic coarctation Flashcards
What is aortic coarctation?
Aortic coarctation is a relatively common congenital heart defect defined by narrowing of the aorta, typically distal to the origin of the left subclavian artery near the insertion of ductus arteriosus/ligamentum arteriosum.
This results in significant obstruction in blood flow, resulting in increased pressure proximal to the constriction and reduced distal perfusion.
Potential complications include hypertension, congestive cardiac failure, stroke and aortic dissection.
