Macbeth
LM + Iago = both drive protagonist to kill I.E “live a coward in thine own esteem”
Desdemona + LM = drive husbands to madness because too independent
Othello + Macbeth = both military men who value reputation
Iago + Macbeth = driven to kill by desire to climb social ladder
jealous y as a destructive force/something that drives characters to madness
- Duncan: “noble Macbeth, hath won”
Much Ado about nothing
Both Desdemona and Othello’s relationship and Hero and Claudio’s relationship are idealistic
comparing these to Benedick and Beatrice we can see it isn’t true love as this couple look past each others flaws to see the love beneath.
The Taming of the Shrew
Katharine is considered “tamed” when she starts agreeing with her husband and laughing when he wants her to, treating her like a puppet
- to marry her, if her dowry please” (1, 2, 183). This is stating that he will marry her if the amount of money he offers is enough for her father to approve their marriage
Hamlet
- Hamartia = Othello’s and Hamlet’s need for revenge (“Revenge his foul and most unnatural murder.” (1.5))
- nobles in Hamlet speek in blank verse, Othello speaks in Prose often.
- Hamlet is often alone when he delivers soliloquies, Gertrude has a closet
