Slavery - without this the south would suffer economically.
Within the context of the American Civil War, why were southerners denied a feeling of independence?
Many northerners moved south after The Union won the war. As the southern states wanted to leave The Union, this further makes them feel trapped within it.
Within the context of the American Civil War, why was New Orleans different in values from Louisiana?
Louisiana valued slavery, while New Orleans was a diverse place with multiple ethnicities, and was known for its tolerance.
