Syntactical units
Full stops within poems to stop and start sentences
Effect- stands on its own- more powerful
Cesuras
Stop and start- grammar within the centre of a sentence
Effect- Creates dramatic pauses, breaks the flow
Enjambement
The flow of poetic lines onto another
Effect- creates a lyrical and poetic atmosphere- reflects a stream of thoughts/romance etc
Prose
Sentences with no structure or rhythm
Effect - usually used to show the lower class
Verse/Blank Verse/Iambic pentameter
Sentences with a rhythm and set structure ( shorter sentences)
Effect- usually used to voice the upper class to show sophistication and education
Rhyming couplet
When the last word of two iambic pentameters rhyme to end the sentence
Effect- Usually creates a powerful effect and allows the final line to resonate within the readers mind
Proleptic irony
An earlier event will foreshadow/give the audience a clue of whats to come
Dramatic Irony
when the audience knows of something prior to it being spoken of on stage
Structure
the placement of things and the extract itself - what comes where and why it comes there and what impact such passage has/relevance in the context of the play as a whole
Form
The type of text you read/study - BE AWARE, TWELFTH NIGHT WILL HAVE BEEN PERFORMED- IT’S FORM WILL HAVE TO BE ANALYSED AS SPEECH AND DRAMA!
