AO2 Flashcards
Outline the criticisms from David Hume
Philosopher critic #1
In dialogues concerning Natural Religion (1779):
> Why did the universe have to have a beginning? Why can’t it go back to infinity?
> Just because things within the universe have a cause it doesn’t mean the universe itself does.
> We have no experience of universes being created
> Even if it does have a cause, it doesn’t mean its a christian God.
“Its not possible to argue from causes within the universe to causes of the cause”.
Outline the criticisms from Immanuel Kant
Psychologist critic
> He could not accept God as the first cause
> We cannot transfer our knowledge of universe to things outside of it
> It’s impossible to have knowledge of what God created or of God himself.
Outline the criticisms from Anthony Kenny
Scitentist critic
In “Fiveways” (1965)
> 1st way (motion) - Nothing moves itself)
X People and animals move themselves.
> Newtons 1st law of motion disproves this argument.
Newtons first law “wrecks the argument of the 1st way”
“Humans and animals can move themselves. It is possible for objects to have uniform motion as well as to be in a state of rest. Newtons 1st law of motion probes this.
