ao1 free will Flashcards
1
Q
what is free will?
A
the belief that each individual has the power to make choices about their behaviour, without being determined by internal or external forces beyond their control
2
Q
define moral responsibility
A
- an individual is in charge of their own actions = behaviour is self-determined
- the law states that children and the mentally ill don’t have responsibility everyone else does
- therefore humans are accountable for their behaviour regardless of innate factors/early experiences
3
Q
the humanistic approach on free will
what does it suggest?
A
- rogers 1959 = as long as an individual remains controlled by casual factors they cannot take responsibility for their own behaviour and so can’t change it
- only when responsibility is taken self actualisation is possible
- humanism is praised as a positive approach = sees people as free to give them a chance to better themselves
