AO1 - Definitions Flashcards
What is aggressive drive?
If our attempt to achieve a goal is blocked by some external factor, we experience frustration. This can create an aggressive drive which leads to aggressive behaviours.
What is catharsis?
This hypothesis is based on the psychodynamic approach of catharsis - the need to release negative feelings.
What is sublimation?
Using aggression in acceptable activities such as sport.
What is displacement?
Shifting the root cause of your anger to a different (weaker) target.
What is the weapon effect?
The presence of environmental cues (such as weapons) can stimulate aggression.
What is the Negative Affect Theory?
Berkowitz - reformation of the frustration-aggression hypothesis; frustration is one of many aversive stimuli (eg loneliness, jealousy and pain) that create negative feelings generally, which may lead to responses which include, but is not limited to, aggression, such as withdrawal, anxiety, guilt or depression.
