Phoneme
the smallest segmental unit of sound employed to form meaningful contrasts between utterances.
Grapheme
a fundamental unit in a written language. Examples include alphabetical letters, numeral digits, and punctuation marks.
Morpheme
the smallest component of a word, or other linguistic unit, that has semantic meaning. They can be free or bound.
Graphophonic cues
looking at the shape of words, linking these to familiar graphemes/words to interpret them.
Semantic cues
understanding the meanings of words and making connections between words or ideas.
Visual cues
looking at the pictures and using visual narrative to interpret unfamiliar words or ideas.
Syntactic cues
applying knowledge of word order and word classes to work out if a word seems right in the context.
Contextual cues
searching for understanding in the situation of the story - comparing it to their own experience or their pragmatic understanding of social convections
Miscue
making errors when reading - a child might miss a word or substitute another that looks similar, or guess a word from accompanying pictures.
Digraph
two graphemes put together to make one phoneme e.g sh, ch, qu, wh, oo, ea etc
