  • Advise Client to observer for manifestations. Instruct the client to nitify the provider if effects occur
  • Advise the client to avoid hazardous activities (Driving, Operatation of Heavy Machinery/Equipment)
    • Advise the Client to observe for manifestations. Instruct Client to notify the MD and withhold the medications if effest occur.

A
  • Accute Toxicity- Advise the Client and Family to observe for manifestations of overdose. Notify MD if these occur
  • Oral Toxicity- Drowsiness, Lethargy, Confusion: For oral toxicity, gastric lavage is used, followed by the administration of activated charcoal, or Sailne carhartics,
  • IV Toxicity- Respiratory Depression, Severe Hypotension, Cardiac Arrest.
    • Benzodiazepines for IV use include Diazepam(valium) and Lorazepam(ativan)
  • Interventions For both toxicitys include:
    • Adminstration of Flumazenil(Romazicon) to counteract Sedation and reverse adverse effects
    • Monitor Client Vital signs, Maintain Patent airway, and provide fluids to maintain Blood Pressure
    • Ensure Availability of Resuscitation equipment
      • Ensure Availability of resuscitation equipment

Withdrawl Effects include anxiety, insomnia, diaphoresis, tremors, and light headedness. WIthdrawl, occurs infrequently with short term use.

After taking Diazepam regularly In high doses, the client should taper the dose over several weeks using a prescribed tapered dosing Schedule to avoid withdrawl issues.

  • Diazepam is a Pregnancy Risk Category D Med
  • Benzodiazepine’s are classified under Schedule IV or the Controlled substance act
  • Diazeam is contraindcated in clients who have sleep apnea, Respiratory Depression, and/or Glaucoma
  • Use Diazepam caustiouls in clients who have liver disease and/or a history of substance use disorder
    • Benzodiazepine’s are generally used short-term due to the reisk for dependence.

  • Advise Client to take Med as prescribed, and to avoid discontiuation of the treatment to prevent withdrawal manifestaions.
  • When discontinuing Benzodiazepines, that have been taken Regularly for long periods and in higher doses, taper the dose over several weeks using a prescribed dosing schedule
  • Administer Mdidicaiton with meals or snacks if GI upset occures
  • advise the client to swallow sustained-release tablets and to avoid chewing or crushing the tablets
  • Instruct the client about the potenntial for dependency during and after treatment and notify md if indications of withdrawal occur
