what is the definition of GAD
chronic, excessive worry for at least 6 months. reasons for this worry can not be due to another mental health condition, substance use or solely related to a physical condition. the anxiety causes distress and impairment
causes of anxiety
ongoing worry and anxiety regarding many events or thoughts that the patient recognises as excessive or inappropriate
risk factors for GAD
family Hx, physical, emotional stress trauma other anxiety disorder, chronic health condition
epidemiology
5% lifetime prevalence
more common among females
what criteria is used for diagnosis
DSM-5
DSM-5 criteria for diagnosis of GAD
excessive anxiety or worry occurring more days than not for at least 6 months. patient finds it difficult to control the worry. 3 or more of following;
restlessness, easily fatigued, difficulty concentrating, irritability, muscle tension, sleep disturbances
when can you not diagnose GAD
if the worries are due to another mental health condition, solely due to physical condition or substance misuse
other presenting symptoms of GAD
headache, dizziness, GI symptoms, sweating, increased heart rate, shortness of breath
treatment options
psychotherapy, pharmacotherapy and non drug therapy
