What is the criteria for a panic disorder?
experience of panic attacks accompanied by persistent fear of having additional attacks, implications of this one and social/behavioral changes due to the current attack
w/ or w/out agorophobia

caffeine and nicotine

drug abuse and depression
How do we treat panic disorders?
BZD- taper, SSRI, psychotherapy
What is agorophobia?
fear of being at a public place unable to escape and with no help around if you had a panic attack
What is the diagnostic criteria for a specific phobia?
persistent excessive fear brought about by specific situation or object
exposure to said object causes immediate anxiety
patient recognizes fear is excessive
situation is avoided

systemic desensitization, short course of BZD if necc
What are the characteristics of Obsessive compulsive disorder?
obsession- recurrent and intrusive thought, feeling or idea
compulsion- a conscious repetitive behavior linked to an obsession that when preformed, functions to relieve anxiety caused by obsession.
time consuming and interfere with work, or social life
there is no realistic link between compulsions and obsession
preoccupied with lists and details, inflexible
What is the treatment for OCD?
HIGH DOSES OF SSRIs
What is the diagnostic criteria of PTSD?
response to a catastrophic (life threatening) traumatic event in which the patient re experiences the trauma, avoids reminders of the event, and experiences emotional numbing or hyperarousal

What is the criteria for generalized anxiety disorder?
persistent anxiety and hyperarousal for atleast 6 mo. They worry about general daily events and their anxiety is difficult to control. a/w: restlessness fatigue diff concentrating irritability muscle tension sleep disturbance
How do we treat GAD?
buspirone
BZD
SSRI
