Antiviral therapy Flashcards
In which form famciclovir is it converted in vivo
Famciclovir is rapidly converted in vivo to penciclovir
What is the mode of action of famciclovir
Once converted to penciclovir, it will selectively inhibit herpes viral DNA synthesis by competetively inhibiting DNA polymerase
Famciclovir is considered a virostatic agent and therefore does not affect latent virus or clear the virus
How are pharmakocinetics in cats
Pharmakocinetics are non-linear in cats probably due to saturation of biotransformation enzymatic systems
What precaution should be taken in patient with renal dysfunction
It should be used with caution and dosage adjustment
What are the side effects of famciclovir
Adverse effects in cats are not well documented, but the drug appears to be tolerated quite well when used for up to 3 weeks
At doses of 90 mg/kg, PO, q8h, anorexia and polydipsia have been noted in some cats
What could be a reasonable dose of famciclovir according to pharmacokinetic studies
Pharmacokinetic studies on plasma and tears suggest a doasge of approximately 40 mg/kg, PO, q8h is reasonable, although lower dosages or dosing frequency may yet prove efficacious
What are the current treatment duration recommendations
Tretament duration recommendations can vary somewhat with 2-4 week duration often suggetsed
What kind of retroviral drug is Zidovudine and what is its mode of action
Zidovudine is a nucleoside analogue reverse transcriptase inhibitor
It inhibitis FIV replication, reduces viral load, improves the immunological and clinical status of FIV-infected cats
What are the main indications for Zidovudine
It can be useful in stomatitis and neurological disease due to FIV
5-10 mg/kg, PO, q12h
What is the main problem when using Zidovudine
Resistance can arise after only 6 months’use
What is Raltegravir
It is an integrase inhibitor
What is the indication of Raltegravir
It seems effective against FIV and FeLV at 40 mg, PO, q12h but it should be given continuously
