Antitussives Flashcards
Opioid Antitussives (Codeine) MOA?
Acts in the CNS to elevate cough threshold; most effective cough suppressant available
Should productive coughs be suppressed ?
No, bc we need to get the mucus out
What is an adverse effect of Codeine?
Can suppress respiration, NEED TO MONITOR
Opioid Antitussives (Hydrocodone) MOA?
Acts in CNS to elevate cough threshold, suppresses frequency and intensity of cough
Why do people like Hydrocodon?
B/c it is more potent with greater liability for abuse
Adverse reaction to Hydrocodon?
Can suppress respiration, NEED TO MONITOR
Dextromethorphan
Non-opioid antitussive
Most widely used of all cough meds
Does not decrease respiration in therapeutic doses
In large doses can cause a euphoria effect, that is why its sometimes abused
Diphenhydramine
Antihistamine with ability to suppress cough, suppression achieved only at levels that produce sedation
Benzonatate
Not recommended in kids under the age of 10
Expectorants: guaifenesin (Mucinex)
Stimulates the flow of respiratory tract secretions
Nursing implications with guaifensen (mucinex)
Pt should drink a lot of water to make the mucus thin enough to get it up
Mucolytics types
Hypertonic saline
acetylcysteine (Mucomyst) admin by inhilation
Mucolytic MOA
Reacts directly with mucus to make it more watery-should help to make cough more productive
Ingredients of combination cold remedies
Nasal decongestant, Antitussive, Analgesic, Anithistamine, caffeine- to offset sedation from histamine
Combo cold remedy contraindications
Productive Cough
Children: we dont know what is an effective or safe dose in kids
