Antithrombotic Drugs Flashcards
What are the antiplatelet drugs?
Aspirin
Clopidogrel and Prasugrel
Dipyridamole and Cilostazol
Abciximab, eptifibatide, and tirofiban
What is the mechanism of action of aspirin?
Irreversibly inhibits the enzyme cyclooxygenase (COX) which blocks thromboxane A2
What is the mechanism of action of clopidogrel and prasugrel?
Inhibits the binding of ADP to its platelet P2Y12 receptor
What is the mechanism of action of abciximab, eptifibatide and tirofiban?
Blocks binding of fibrinogen to glycoprotein IIb/ IIIa receptors on the platelet which inhibit platelet aggravation
What is the mechanism of action of warfarin?
Inhibits vitamin K dependant clotting factors - II, VII, IX and X
Anticoagulant
What is the mechanism of action of heparin?
Binds reversibly to ATIII leads to inactivation factors IIa and Xa
Factor Xa cleaves prothrombin to make thrombin
What is the mechanism of action of apixaban, edoxaban and rivaroxaban?
Direct and reversible inhibitors of factor Xa which prevents thrombin generation
Anticoagulant
What is the mechanism of action of Dabigatran and Bivalirudin/ Argatroban?
Reversible inhibitor of free thrombin, fibrin bound thrombin, and thrombin-induced platelet aggregation
