Who’s idea was it to wash your hands before surgery?
Semmelweiss.
What did they wash their hands with?
Calcium Chloride Solution.
What were the germs (undiscovered at the time) causing women to obtain during/ after labour?
Childbed Fever.
Why were Semmelweiss ideas/methods not maintained after his time?
People dismissed the idea that washing your hands could save someone’s life (despite a reduction in deaths when this was applied).
Who used Pasteur’s ‘germ theory’ to make developments in surgery in 1867?
Lister.
Why did surgeons start to boil there instruments?
to sterilize them.
What is aseptic surgery?
When infection is solved before or after surgery.
What did Lister develop to solve infection in surgery?
The Donkey Engine which sprayed carbolic acid during surgery.
How did Pasteur discover microbes?
He was investigating what made wine taste different under order of the Emperor Napoleon ill. He discovered that boiling the wine killed the microbes.
What did the love between a doctor and a nurse inspire? Why?
It inspired a doctor to develop disposable gloves for a nurse as her hands were being damaged during surgery from the Carbolic Acid.
