Antimicrobials Flashcards
Used to treat meningitis and Rocky Mountain spotted fever in the developing world. Causes gray baby syndrome
chloramphenicol
Drugs that bind the 50S subunit
chloramphenicol, clindamycin, linezolid, macrolides, streptogramins (quinupristin, dalfopristin)
Linezolid is used to treat
MRSA, VRE (E. faecalis, E. faecium)
Adverse side effects of linezolid
bone marrow suppression, serotonin syndrome (inhibits MOA)
Adverse side effects of macrolides
MACRO “M”-gastric motility, “A”- arrhythmia prolonged QT interval, “C”- cholestatic hepatitis, “R”- rash, “O”- eosinophilia
Macrolide’s clinical use
atypical pneumonias (mycoplasma, chlamydia, legionella), STI (chlamydia), B pertussis
What condition can you not concurrently administer aminoglycosides
myasthenia gravis
aminoglycosides are usually coupled with these other drugs to improve effectiveness
b-lactam antibiotics
what is required for aminoglycoside uptake into the cell
O2 and b-lactam (probably)
4 side effects of aminoglycosides
Nephrotoxicity, Neuromuscular blockade (don’t give to myasthenia gravis) Ototoxicity, Teratogen
Neomycin
prep for bowel surgery, remains active in GI
Paromycin
parasite infection like E. histolytica
Streptomycin
F. tularensis, Y. pestis
Gentamicin and Tobramycin
enterobacter, Serrate, Klebsiella, Pseudomonas
Drugs that bind the 30s subunit
Aminoglycosides, Tetracyclines
