What is the MOA of cefazolin (Ancef)?
“Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis.
Gram + bacilli and cocci,
Gram – rods (proteus mirabili, e.coli, klebsiella pneumonia)
NOT MRSA!”
What are the indications of cefazolin (Ancef)?
“Pre op prophylaxis (esp in “clean” surgical procedure) where infection would be catastrophic (immune suppressed, elderly, steroids), and to prevent endocarditis
Cardiovascular, orthopedic/joint, biliary, pelvic, intra=abdominal, skin and soft tissue infections.”
What is the onset, PB, E1/2 life, and metabolism of Cefazolin (Ancef)
Give within 1 hr of incision pre op
75% PB
E1/2 life = 90-150mins
80-100% unchanged in urine
What are the Adverse Effects of Cefazolin (Ancef)?
“Thrombophlebitis
NVD cramps, oral thrush, colitis
Itching, rash, fever, anaphylaxis, Stevens Johnson synd.
Transient rise in liver enzymes and BUN without damage
Toxic nephropathy, hepatic dysfunction, urticarial,

What are the contraindications of Cefazolin (Ancef)?
“Hypersensitivity
cross reactivity to penicillin hypersensitivity”
What is the dosage of cefazolin (Ancef)?
“250mg-2G q 6-12 hrs (max 12G/day)
One time dose pre op = 1-2g IV 30-60mins prior to incision
Some sx need continual administers Q8 hrs for 24hrs.”
