AntiLock and ABS Flashcards
An Antilock Brake System (ABS) is?
Safety system that allows wheels to maintain traction with the road surface, prevents the wheels from locking up in panic stops. ABS works because sensors monitor wheel speed at a rate of 100 times per second.
What are the 4 components of an ABS?
Wheel Sensors, Valves, Pump and Controller
What is the function of the Wheel Sensors
the speed sensors, located at each wheel, collects information on wheel speed for ABS.
What is the function of the Valves
there is a valve in each valve break line controlled by ABS- they have 3 positions. 1. Open, pressure moved right through brake. 2. Closed, valve blocks brake line. 3.partially open, valve releases some air.
What does the Pump do?
: Because valve can release brake pressure. Pump brings pressure back up.
What does the Controller do?
controller (ESC) collects info from wheel sensors, and if wheel loses traction, controller will limit brake force etc.
What is the danger of the ABS system on a loose road surface?
the danger of the ABS is that on loose surfaces the stopping distance can increase, but it also increases vehicle control.
