Antigout, anti inflammatory and muscle relaxers Flashcards
What causes gout
Overproduction or underexcretion of uric acid
Drugs that decrease production of uric acid
Allopurinol/oxypurinol
Drugs that increase excretion of uric acid
Probenecid (not often used due to lots of side effects)
What is the main anti gout medication and what is it used for
Colchicine. Short term for acute and also used as a preventative for recurrent attacks
How do muscle relaxers work
Most of them work directly on the CNS
What is the only muscle relaxer that acts directly on muscles and what is it mostly used for
Dantrolene - malignant hypothermia
What is a severe contraindication of muscle relaxers
Do not take other CNS depressants (alcohol, opiates) and if you do then monitor airway, EKG, fluid management
What are the 3 most common muscle relaxers
Cyclobenzaprine, Baclofen, Dantrolene
What drug is both oral and injectable and used to treat muscular conditions like MS and cerebral palsy
Baclofen
What drug is used for acute injuries and muscle spasm from muscle injuries
Cyclobenzaprine
What is one important patient education for muscle relaxers
Do not discontinue abruptly and patients may need assistance with ADLs
Colchicine
used if NSAIDs don’t work enough, short-term treatment for acute and also used as a preventative for attacks (MAIN ANTI GOUT MEDICATION)
