What are some characteristics of a tragic hero?
- a person of importance
- good but not perfect
- moves from happiness to disaster through some character flaw or error in judgement, or through the forces of fate
Tragic flaw of error in judgement. The flaw is usually viewed as strength but causes downfall.

Arouses feelings of pity and terror in the audience: what if that happened to me?

Cleaning or purging of emotions.

What was the festival of Dionysus?
Athenians held this festival to honor Dionysus. And it often included dances, dramatics, presentations, ect.
What were the competitions?
They were competitions between playwrights who wrote plays based on well known myths. There would be separate competitions for a tragedy and a comedy.

They wore elaborate masks and costumes.

Violence or irreverence because they didn’t want to disrespect the gods.

What would they use for special effects?
They would use devices to imitate thunder, a wheeled platform rolled out of a skene to show so,etching that had taken place indoors, and the machine which was some type of lifting arm to mount on top of a skene and bring in the gods miraculously.
A group of singers which helps the audience interpret the play. They also would represent the townspeople in Antigone.
