Antidepressants Flashcards
What type of drug is Amitriptyline?
Tricyclic antidepressant (TCA)
What is the mode of action for TCAs
Stops re-uptake of serotonin & noradrenaline at pre-synaptic terminal
Most significant S/E of TCAs
Heart problems (incr QT / tachycard / postural hypotension) V dangerous in OD
Contraindications for TCAs (4)
Cardiac probs
Narrow angle glaucoma
Prostatism
Epilepsy
Phenelzine, Isocarboxazid, Tranylcypromine are types of what antidepressant?
Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MOAIs)
Interactions of MOAIs? (4)
Blue cheese
Beer
Yeast / soy
Pickled herring
S/E of MOAIs (3)
Postural hypot
Wt gain
Insomnia / hallucinations
Sertraline, Citalopram, Fluoxetine, Paroxetine are types of which antidepr?
SSRIs (Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors)
What is mech of action of SSRIs
Block reuptake of serotonin at pre synaptic membrane
Important SE of SSRIs (3)
Incr QT
GI irritation / bleed (avoid NSAIDs)
Hyponatraemia
Why should under 18s not get SSRIs?
Increased risk of suicide
What type of antid. are Mirtazapine & Trazodone?
Receptor blockers
What is the mech of action for receptor blockers?
Block alpha 2 noradrenaline receptor or serotonin rec. at presyn membrane - cell doesnt get reuptake signal, thinks not enough being produced so produces more noradrenaline and serotonin
Are receptor blockers very cardiotoxic or dangerous in OD?
No
Mild SE of receptor blockers (2)
Sedative & wt gain
