Anticoagulants + Antithrombotics Flashcards
1
Q
What is the MOA for heparin
A
Cofactors for ATIII
INHIBITS factors 2, 10, 11 and 12
2
Q
Which factor does LMWH and fondaparinux inhibit
A
Factor 10
3
Q
What are the advantages of using LMWH over UH
A
LMWH has a longer half life and has a more predictable response so no monitoring needed
Weight doesn’t need to be used to calculate dose
Less risk of osteoporosis with LMWH
4
Q
When may UH be used over LMWH
A
When rapid control is needed I.e. The risk of bleeding is very high
5
Q
What are the adverse effects of heparin.
A
Thrombocytopenia - immune mediated, 6 days after initiation –> thrombosis
Osteoporosis with long term use
Hyperkalaemia - heparin inhibits aldosterone
