Anticoagulants and Atrial fibrillation Flashcards

1
Q

What is Haemostasis

A

= refers to the stopping of bleeding

3 stages

  1. vascular spasm
  2. platelet aggregation and plaque formation - antiplatelet drugs
  3. coagulation (thrombus, clot) - Anticoagulant drugs

Q

Atrial fibrillation

A

= cardiac dysrhythmia —> very fast, disorganised electrical activity in atrial that is not sinus rhythm

	- not effective atrial contraction, quivers faster than 300 per min
	- can be a symptomatic or breathlessness, dizziness, thumping heartbeat

Q

Treatment of atrial fibrillation

A
  1. Rate or rhythm control
    - rhythm control: reversion to and maintenance of sinus rhythm
    - rate control: control ventricular rate and increase refractory period of AV node
  2. Anticoagulants to reduce risk of thrombi formation and this ischaemic stroke
