Anticholinergics Flashcards
Anticholinergic is used interchangeably with with what other term?
-Antimuscarinic
Though anticholinergics have effects at Nicotinic cholinergic sites, as well
Function of anticholinergic drugs
- Competitively antagonize effects of Ach
- Can be naturally occuring or synthetic agents
Drugs we used are considered ________at usual doses
antimuscarinic
If naturally occurring, anticholinergics are______ from the ______plant
- alkaloids
- Belladonna plant
Synthetic anticholinergics are this type of derivative
quaternary ammonium derivatives
Naturally occuring are______from the combination of tropic acid and a complex organic base, the drugs are _____forms
- esters
- racemic
These drug classes have similar structures to anticholinergic drugs and therefor have some Antimuscarinic effects
- antihistamines
- antipsychotics
- antidepressants
Anticholinergic MOA
- Combines reversibly with receptor (prevent Ach from activating site)
- Effects overcome by increasing Ach concentrations
- Effects of muscarinic action due to 5 subsets of muscarinic receptors
Where are the 5 subsets of Muscarinic actions located? M1, M2,M3, M4, and M5 receptors
- M1: CNS & stomach
- M2: CNS,airway smooth muscle, heart
- M3: CNS, Glands, airway smooth muscle
- M4: CNS, Heart
- M5: CNS
Effect of lower doses on M3 (glands-bronchial and salivary)
-receptors inhibited @ lower doses
Effect of slightly higher doses @ M1&M2 receptors
- M1: higher doses will inhibit M1 cholinergic control of GI motility, secretions, and urination
- M2, Heart & eye stimulated
Receptor site offset by anticholinergics
Only muscarinic (Not nicotinic)
