Antibodies and Antigens Flashcards

1
Q

IgM

A
  • μ heavy chain
  • B-cell recepter
  • Activates Complement
  • Monomer on B-cell
  • Pentamer found in serum
  • Present in blood and heart
  • blood born infections
  • 1st Ab produced
  • half life is approx 5 days

Q

IgD

A
  • δ heavy chain
  • Very labile (degraded immediately inblood so only fxn as receptor on surface of B-cell)
  • B-cell receptor
  • Monomer
  • Marker for mature B cell
  • Very low concentration in serum because as soon as it is made and released into the serum, it is degraded bc it is unstable

Q

IgG 1-4

A
  • γ heavy chain
  • Activates complement
  • Crosses placenta; Provides immunity in developing fetus
  • Present in all tissues
  • longest half life–20-23 days (therefore, highest concentration in serum)
  • Provides passive immunity because of long half life
  • monomer

Q

IgA

A
  • α heavy chain
  • Protects mucosal surfaces
  • Monomer in serum/blood
  • Dimer in secretions at mucosal surfaces (Secretory component associated with the dimeric form)
  • Dimeric; found in secretions: GI, urogenital, respiratory, breast milk, protecets against foreign pathogens

Q

IgE

A
  • ε heavy chain
  • Anti-parasitic; important protective fxn
  • Mediates allergic rxns
  • Immediately binds mast cells in CT once secreted so not found free floating
  • Found in blood vessels
  • LOWEST serum concentration
  • SHORTEST half life
