Antibodies Flashcards
What are the different isotopes of antibody?
IgM IgG IgA IgD IgE
What is the function of IgM in an immune response?
Main antibody of primary responses
Best at fixing compliment
Monomer form of IgM acts as the B cell receptor
What is the function of IgG in an immune response?
Main blood antibody of secondary responses
Neutralises toxins
Opsonisation
What is the function of IgA in an immune response?
Secreted into mucas, tears, saliva and colostrum
What is the function of IgE in an immune response?
Antibody of allergy and antiparasitic activity
What is the function of IgD in an immune response?
B cell receptor
What are the functions of antibodies?
To function as the B cell receptor Neutralise viruses Neutralise toxins Bind to pathogen surface and activate classical complement Oponisation
Antibodies neutralising viruses
Bind to the surface proteins of the virus
This blocks it from attaching and entering a host cell
How do antibodies activate compliment?
IgM or multiple IgG antibodies
Bind to a pathogen surface and act as a platform for the C1 complex to begin the classical pathway
Antibody role in opsonisation
Acts with certain immune cells that express Fc receptors which bind to the constant domain of the antibody heavy chain
Cell binds to antibodies and engulfs them and the bound pathogen
Put in a vesicle and phagocytosed
