antibodies Flashcards
what is an antigen
molecules that stimulate an immune response. usually proteins or glycoproteins in plasma membrane of pathogen. foreign antigen will be detected by the immune system and will stimulate the production of antibodies, specific to antigen.
what is an antibody
immunoglobins; complex proteins produced by plasma cells in immune system. they released when infection is about. they are specific to antigens. one antibody for one antigen detected. they attach to antigens and make them harmless.
state 3 ways in which antibodies work
opsonins
agglutinins
anti-toxin
describe the three antibodies
opsonins - makes englufling of pathogen easier for phagocytes
agglutinins - antibodies that cause pathogens to stick together
anti-toxins - antibodies that make toxins harmless
