Antibiotics, resistance & HAIs Flashcards
1
Q
How do we measure resistance?
A
Minimum inhibitory Concentration (MIC). Numerical quantification of resistance relies on preparing doubling dilutions of the antimicrobial in a broth which allows the growth of the bacterium you are testing then inoculating each tube with that bacterium. The tube which shows failure to grow is referred to as MIC.
2
Q
What is antimicrobial resistance?
A
the lack of effect of an antimicrobial in a patient against a previously susceptible bacterium.
