Antibiotics Flashcards
Puromycin
Causes premature termination in both eukaryotes and prokaryotes
Cycloheximide
Inhibits peptidyl transferase (60s) in eukaryotes
Chloramphenicol
Inhibits peptidyl transferase (50s) in prokaryotes and mitochondria. SEVERE INFECTION ONLY.
Streptomycin
Interacts with S-12 (30s); inhibits initiation and causes misreading of mRNA in prokaryotes. In streptomycin resistant strains of bacteria, S12 is altered so streptomycin cant bind the bacterial ribosome.
Tetracyclines
Interact with 30S ribosomal subunit and inhibit binding of incoming AA-tRNA to “A” site in prokaryotes
Erythromycin
Interacts with 50S ribosomal subunit to block exit tunnel and release of nascent polypeptide in prokaryotes. In resistant strains, 23S rRNA is methylated and erythro no longer binds to 50S.
