Antibiotics 2 Flashcards
What does selective toxicity mean?
It kills the pathogen and not host cells
What does bactericidal mean?
Kills bacteria
What does bacteriostatic mean?
Prevents bacteria from reproducing but does not kill it
What are the main protein synthesis inhibitors?
Aminoglycosides (gentamicin)
Tetracyclines (minocycline)
Macrolides (erythromycin)
What does gentamicin do?
Bactericidal
Toxic- causes damage to kidneys
What do tetracyclines do?
Stops chain elongation
Broad spectrum
Resistance is increasing
What are antibiotics that target nucleic acids?
Fluoroquinolones ( ciprofloxacin)
Metronidazole (nitromadazoles)
Trimethoprim
What do quinolones do?
Inhibits DNA synthesis
What do nitromadazoles do?
Act against anaerobes
Indeuces DNA strand breakage
What is biofilm?
Multi-cellular structure in which cells stick to each other
What are persistor cells?
Sub population of cells that resist treatment and become antimicrobial tolerant
What does MRSA stand for?
Methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus
What does ESBL stand for?
Extended spectrum b lactamases
What does CPE stand for?
Carbapenemase producing enterobacteriaceae
What are types of horizontal gene transfer?
Transformation
Transduction
Conjugation
