Antibiotics Flashcards
Why don’t antibiotics treat viral infections
They only treat bacterial infections
How do antibiotics treat bacterial infections
- Breaking down the outside layer
- Stops bacteria from reproducing
- Stops chemical reactions from happening inside bacteria
How were antibiotics discovered
Alexander Fleming was growing bacteria on agar plates, he came back form holiday and saw a plate that had a fungus in it, the fungus had no bacteria growing next to it, he found out that the fungus had naturally produced a substance to protect itself from the bacteria.
What is antibiotic resistance
The widespread usage of antibiotics means that bacteria are becoming more and more resistant to antibiotics with time and antibiotics aren’t be discovered as fast as how bacteria are becoming more resistant that means eventually illnesses that can be treated now with antibiotics may not be able to be treated with them in the future.
What are 4 uses of antibiotics
Tetanus
Cholera
Gonorrhoea
Pneumonia
