antibiotics Flashcards
Name the gram positive rods
Gram positive rods/ bacilli:
-Bacillus
-Listeria
-Corneybacterium
-Clostridium
how does C difficile present?
-diarrhoea, fever, and abdo pain
what antibiotics do you use for C difficile?
IV antibiotics are NOT effective against C difficile
ORAL vancomycin (is severe)
-NG or PR if oral not feasible
Metronidazole (if mild)
Isolate patient in room, wash hands with soap and water because spores are resistant to alocohol gel
what test is done to determine the strain of staphylococcus?
Coagulase test (the staff are coaguLAZY)
example of coagulase positive staphylococcus?
Staphylococcus aureus (staph A+)
example of coagulase negative staphylococcus?
Staphylococcus epidermis
patient eats dodgy meat + cheese and gets diarrhoea
-what bacteria?
listeria monocytogenes
what gram positive bacilli commonly causes meningo encephilitis?
Listeria monocytogenes
who is at higher risk of developing listeria monocytogenes?
-pregnant people
-extremes of ages
-alcohol misuse
-immunosuppressed
people eating dodgy meats and cheese
who is at greater risk of developing C difficile?
-People on antibiotics (cephalosporins, clyndamycin and penicillin)
-Hospitalisation
-Gastric acid suppression
-Age >65 years
-Co morbidities
what bacteria is commonly said to be gold?
staph aureus
what test is done to distinguish the different streps?
Hamolysis test
what does beta haemolysis look like?
beta haemolysis= complete clearing around the colonies
examples of bacteria that go through complete haemolysis (beta haemolysis)?
-streptococcus pyogenes
what can streptococcus pyogenes commonly cause
skin and soft tissue infection
explain alpha haemolysis?
alpha haemolysis- green discolouration around the colonies and partial haemolysis
examples of alpha haemlysis?
Viridans streptococci
Streptococcus pnemonia
