Antibiotic resistance Flashcards
Why are resistant bacteria a challenge?
- reproduce rapidly
- mutations produce new strains(eg MRSA)
- resistant strains survived and reproduce
- resistant strains spread
How to prevent resistance strains appearing
Doctors to stop prescribing antibiotics innapropiately
Patients completing the antiobiotic course
Agricultural use of antibiotics should be restricted
What is MRSA?
MRSA is methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus which is spread when doctors go from patient to patient and as of this it is spread
Why is MRSA a problem?
It is a problem because it can cause people to die from it. Someone that is not necessarily ill when going to a hospital can catch it. It spread a lot as over 1000 people in the 21st century died from MRSA
Why can bacteria evolve rapidly?
They reproduce at a fast rate
What do mutations of bacterial pathogens produce?
New strains
How does the population of the resistant strain increase
Natural selection
Is MRSA resistant to antibiotics?
Yes
What is bad about the development of new antibiotics?
It is costly, slow and is unlikley to keep up with the emergence of new resistant strains
