Antibiotic Drugs Flashcards
Also known as prokaryotes which are single-celled organisms that lack a true nucleus and nuclear membrane. It has a cell wall, that determines its shape.
Bacteria
MEC (Minimum Effective Concentration)
Minimum amount of antibacterial drug to halt the growth of microorganisms.
Antibiotics Combination
i. ADDITIVE EFFFECT - equal to the sum of the effects of two antibiotics
ii. POTENTIATIVE EFFECT – occurs when one antibiotic increases the effectiveness of the 2nd drug
iii. ANTAGONISTIC EFFECT – when two drugs are used together, the desired effect may be greatly reduced
It is primarily effective against one type of organism (selective)
Narrow Spectrum
Sensitivity
Used to test how sensitive organisms are to different antimicrobials for organisms that are resistant to many antimicrobials.
SUPERINFECTION
Happens when antibiotics kill or kill off all of the normal bacteria in the body.
Preventing Nursing Measures
i. Perform hand hygiene before and after client contact
ii. Recognize invasive procedures that increase the chance of infection
iii. Encourage health measures by maintaining up-to-date immunization status
iv. Use infection control procedures to prevent transmission
v. Evaluate effectiveness of treatment
Carbapenems
A type of beta-lactam antibiotic that works against many gram-positive and gram-negative organisms that grow with or without oxygen.
It is used to treat bacteremia, endocarditis, and severe infections of the abdomen and urinary tract.
Aminoglycosides
Medicines for Tuberculosis; RIPES Medication
i. RIFAMPICIN
ii. ISONIAZID
iii. PYRAZINAMIDE
iv. ETHAMBUTOL
v. STREPTOMYCIN
Mycosis
Fungal infection is referred to by this term.
Because of its high morbidity and mortality, protozoal illness is the most serious protozoal disease. The disease is spread via the bite of an infected female anopheles’ mosquito, which is endemic in the Philippines.
Malaria
Anthelmintic Drugs
A drug used to treat parasitic worm infestations in animals Parasites are extremely important in both human tropical medicine and veterinary medicine.
4 major groups of antimicrobial drugs?
- Antibacterial
- Antifungal
- Antiparasitic
- Antiviral
In terms of chemical structure, which antimicrobial drugs are similar to penicillin?
Cephalosporins
